Families First in Essex County

...helping support families and children since 1992

This group is based on the successful mutual support and shared leadership model of Parents Anonymous. The national organization Parents Anonymous Inc. accredits state and local organizations who meet Parents Anonymous.  Benchmarks and Standards and are committed to developing Parents Anonymous groups in local communities.

Parents Anonymous Principles include:

  • Parent leadership - parents recognize and take responsibility for their problems, develop their own solutions and serve as role models for other parents.
  • Mutual support - Help is reciprocal in that parents give and get support from each other , creating a strong sense of community.
  • Shared leadership - parents and service providers build successful partnerships to share responsibility, expertise , and leadership roles.
  • Personal growth - Parents make significant long term positive change by exploring their feelings, identifying their options, and acting on their decisions in an atmosphere of belonging, trust, and acceptance in which healthy interactions are modeled.
The Parents Anonymous support group at Families First:
  • Has a trained Group Facilitator and a Parent Group Leader who share responsibility for facilitating the group
  • Meets weekly for two hours
  • Has an accompanying structured Childrens Program, where children of all ages have the opportunity to engage in fun and developmentally appropriate activities while their parents meet
